ROCKFORD - Here in Winnebago County there hasn't been much chaos or confusion on Black Friday. There's a lot of holiday traffic, but not a lot of crime.
There's been a steady stream of customers at Rockford retailers all day long, but shoppers have been quietly going about their shopping.
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says the day has been pretty quiet in terms of crime. There was a purse snatching earlier in the day near one store. Other than that, just a few rear-end collisions from all the parking lot traffic.
Shoppers have really just been playing it smart, but still, police have stepped up patrols just in case anything happens. Sgt. Scott Andrews says, "When it becomes dark, things can get a little more dangerous as far as the crimes. But our patrols aren't going to let up. We're going to be in the parking lots. We're going to be seen as long as the stores are open."
Sgt. Andrews has some tips for anyone going out shopping tonight and through the weekend. He says keep all of your belongings really close to you and shop in numbers. Also when you put stuff away in the car, make sure it's in a safe place so no one is tempted to break into your car and snatch it.
