The plan right now is to install 77 of the sirens, giving coverage to the entire county.By Dani Maxwell
ROCKFORD - Winnebago County will pay for a weather warning system. 13 News was first to show you what the sirens will look like and sound like.
American Signal Corporation will put 77 sirens up. They'll cover the entire county. Smaller ones will go inside Rockford city limits. The larger ones will cover the rest of the area and won't be within 400 feet of someone's home.
Dave Wherry with American Signal Corporation gave us a look at all the equipment Thursday. He says, "With the sirens, remember the old mechanical sirens with the WWII guys cranking the siren? That's how the sound is made here. So it's that old design with the latest technology. It makes it the best."
Two sirens already in South Beloit will get notification when Winnebago County sets theirs off.
