ROCKFORD (WREX) -   A man who used to be a teacher at a private school in Rockford is charged for having sex with a student there.

Matthew Born, 24 was a part-time teacher at Christian Life High School.  Administrators there heard he may have had an inappropriate relationship with a student, and called the police.  "It was brought to the attention of school administrators who did in fact notify the appropriate authorities," says Winnebago County Deputy State's Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross.

According to our media partners at WNTA Radio, the criminal complaint says born had sex with a now 17 year old girl who was only 16 at the time.  It happened in November of last year and again two times this past February.  Hite Ross says the law says that kind of relationship is not consensual.  "Under the laws in the State of Illinois, a child under 18 can not consent to having sexual relations with an adult."

Born faces three separate counts of each:

  • Criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 Felony
  • Aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 Felony
  • Indecent solicitation of a child, a Class 3 Felony

Administrators sent a letter to parents and a copy was sent to 13 News.  It says the relationship happened after school hours and not on school property.  Prosecutors credit Christian Life for how it handled the incident.  "The administrators at the Christian Life Schools have done everything properly when this came to their attention by notifying the appropriate authorities so that the investigation could be conducted in a swift manner so that charges could be brought against Mr. Born."

Police say the investigation is on going and want to hear from you if you know anything about this case.  "Any cases involving school teachers counselors or anyone who has contact or close contact with children we always want to let the public know that if they have any info that they should contact law enforcement officials."

If you know anything, call Rockford Police at (815) 987-5824 or Loves Park Police at (815) 654-5015.

Born was arrested this afternoon in Elgin.  As of Friday afternoon, he hadn't been brought to Winnebago County yet.  His bond will be $100,000.
