FREEPORT (WREX)- Freeport community members brainstorm ways to combat the region's growing poverty rate.
The Freeport Area Church cooperative hosted a "Poverty Solutions Summit" to develop a plan that will raise awareness about struggling families.
According to the Stephenson County Poverty Work Group, 21% of children in the county live in poverty. Summit leaders say it's important to get as much community feedback as possible, to help those children and their families. "It's good to see that other people and other organizations in the community are kind of thinking along the same lines," said Dean Wright of the Freeport Area Church Cooperative.
This is the first time the church cooperative has held a poverty summit.
