Rockford College Baseball headed for big season

ROCKFORD, IL (WREX) - The Rockford College baseball team opened up the 2010 season with a spring break trip to Arizona where they went 5-1 with the bats appearing to be in mid season form averaging over 12 runs per game.

It figures to be just the beginning of a big season for the Regents as the Northern Athletic Conference voted the Regents the preseason favorite. The team doesn't mind having a bullseye directly on their back. It begins with Head Coach Bob Koopman, "Being picked to win it by the rest of the coaches in the conference we take it as a big honor and it's something we want to live up to." Left handed pitcher Kevin Patterson echoes the sentiment, "It's good to be in the position that we're in. Everybody's chasing us. We're always the team to beat but on the other hand we're going to see everyone's top pitchers but I think our offense can handle it."

Koopman, now in his 4th season at the helm, has his most experienced group to date with 12 Seniors on the roster including the top 5 in the batting order and the Regents will lean heavily on that experience, "In the conference games that's huge because every game is so intense. It's like your going to the playoffs so it's going to be big says Senior Center Fielder Tyler Clay."
3rd Baseman Eric Nicholson adds,"I think we're going to do what a lot of people expect us to do and that's put the ball in play and steal bases and put up numbers offensively and our pitchers are going to shut people down just like they're supposed to."

The Regents return to action Wednesday in Dubuque against the defending Iowa Conference champs from Loras College. First pitch is set for 4:30 P.M.
