CARROLL COUNTY (WREX) - Illinois Governor Pat Quinn plans to review a letter from Illinois Republicans about the possible deal to sell a Carroll County prison to the federal government to house Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Seven lawmakers, including Congressmen Mark Kirk and Don Manzullo, have sent Quinn a letter with a list of questions about the Thomson Correctional Center. One of the things they asked about is trials for the detainees.
On Friday, Quinn said the question about trials was one for the federal government, but he says he believes there would be none in Illinois.
On Saturday, democratic leaders will tour the facility. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, Illinois Representative Phil Hare and Iowa Representative Bruce Brale will go on the tour.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs Phil Carter, Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons Harley Lampin, and Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections Michael P. Randle will join them on the tour.
The group plans to meet with community members afterwards.
