Nicholas SheleyGALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- A man accused of killing eight people has been sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting employees at the Knox County Jail while awaiting trial.
Judge Stephen Mathers sentenced 30-year-old Nicholas Sheley on Friday.
Sheley was convicted of aggravated assault and other charges after he tore apart a chair and threw it at jailers in April. He also punched at least one of them.
Knox County prosecutors contend Sheley is a violent man who deserved as much as 14 years in prison. But defense attorney Jim Harrell asked for leniency and pointed out that Sheley apologized after the attack.
Sheley will be back in court Nov. 6 in Knox County, where he's charged in the June 2008 death of 65-year-old Ronald Randall. He's also charged in seven other killings the same month -- two in Missouri and five in Illinois.
