ROCKFORD (WREX) - The American Red Cross is helping seven people find a place to stay after their apartment building burned Friday morning.
No one was hurt when the two apartments caught fire at 314 North 4th Street around 7:45 a.m. When the first fire crews arrived, they could see heavy flames and smoke shooting out of the back of the building.
Investigators say the fire appears to have been started in the downstairs back bedrooms of the two-story building by a child playing with a lighter.
The fire was under control by 8:30 a.m., but crews remained on the scene for a few hours. Traffic was diverted around Jefferson and 4th Street which was closed for a few hours while crews put out hot spots at the building.
Eyewitness Yolanda Cruz shot pictures and video on her cell phone and sent them to 13 News. Those images can be seen along the left of this story.
