ROCKFORD (WREX) - District 205 uses a recent study to learn more about how truancy affects crime rates.
Police Chief Chet Epperson sent the study to board member Bob Evans who brought it up at the education committee meeting Tuesday night.
Evans says the study out of California shows cutting the dropout rate in half would save about $550 million and prevent 30,000 juvenile crimes a year.
At Tuesday night's meeting, the committee moved forward on a truancy center for students referred by police, the courts, or parents.
Meanwhile, Evans wants District 205 administrators to figure out how reducing the truancy rate might affect Rockford.
Since public schools get state aid based on their average daily attendance, Evans says if they improve attendance with this new truancy center it would mean more money for the district.
Evans hopes to have some numbers by the next school board meeting Tuesday.
