ROCKFORD (WREX) - A Rockford School House turned into apartment-style lofts gets a statewide preservation award. Garrison School Lofts and Town Homes is honored with the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award.
The school was built in 1887 and the gym in 1920. In 2001 the Morrissey family bought the complex and redeveloped it into residential units.
"I believe in preserving. It's our heritage. It's things that our ancestors, you know they built these schools for us and whatever, and we need to take care of them for god's sakes," Joe Morrissey, Owner of Garrison Lofts said.
There are 15 units in the school and gym. There are another 18 units going in as townhomes on the property as well.
