Rockford Public Library supporters marched to city hall last Monday.ROCKFORD (WREX) - A group of Rockford Public Library supporter rally downtown to protest proposed cuts.
Monday night's protest involved two groups, one that gathered at city hall at 5:00 p.m. and another group that marched from the library's main branch to city hall. The groups came together outside council chambers at 5:30 p.m.
Last week a group of supporters marched with the same message, chanting "City of Rockford, pay your share. City of Rockford, pay your share".
They're protesting funding cuts by the city so it can fix it's budget deficit. The Library Board has recommended cutting 24 union workers and 6 non-union employees, reducing branch hours and closing the Lewis Lemmon library branch.
A vote on those cuts was originally scheduled for tonight, but union leaders have requested more information from the public library and are waiting to get that information before a new deadline to come up with alternative funding options can be set.
