
Rockford's new eastside library branch opened on March 7.ROCKFORD (WREX) - The Rockford Public Library is reporting an increase in people using its services due to the struggling economy.
Emily Hartzog with the Rockford Public Library says program attendance is up by 4% from last year, circulation is up 15%, the number of people asking for help at the desk in the library is up 51%, and the number of people signing up to use computers in the library is up 23%.
Overall, library card registrations in Rockford are up 38% compared to last year.
The numbers show more people are shying away from buying books and many people are opting to get rid of their internet service at home and use the free internet at the library.
The Chicago Public Library is also reporting a 30% jump in circulation over the past year.
