ROCKFORD (WREX) - She was a secretary at Auburn High School and a woman who advocated for victims' rights. Monday she became a victim herself - and police think it was a loved one who killed her.

Rockford police were called to 1820 Wedel Avenue, just a few houses down from Huffman Boulevard, Monday morning. When they arrived they found Carol McFeggan, 62, dead in a bedroom, shot in the head.

Her husband, Tom McFeggan, is wanted on charges of first degree murder. Police say he left his daughter a message directing her to the home where the victim's body was found. Neighbors on Wedel say Carol and Tom McFeggan were a friendly couple who showed no signs of outward trouble.

Sandra Glaspie lives up the street on Wedel. "I just can't believe it," she said. "I'm really shocked. Carol was a very nice person, and she will truly be missed at the school district as well as in the neighborhood."

After a drunk driver killed her brother, Craig Peterson, in July 2004, Carol worked with the Winnebago County State's Attorney's office to co-found a homicide survivors' support group. 13 News interviewed Carol in September 2007.

"When you're going through the judicial process," she said at the time, "you'll notice defendants have all the rights."

In a taped interview with 13 News in April 2006 Tom McFeggan, 65, talked about his wife's work.

"People do in fact have to get on with their lives after bad things have happened," he said. "We are here for them. And my wife is here for them."

Now police think he's responsible for gunning Carol down, something one neighbor finds hard to believe.

"He let the kids touch the dogs," said Luis Albarbo, who lives two doors down. "A pretty friendly guy."

Gerri Flynn got to know Carol very well.  The 2 met after Gerri joined the group.  Her son, Eric, was murdered in 2004.  The group helped her heal.  Gerri says she's shocked not only that Carol is gone, but that she died so violently.

"She was a wonderful listener.  And she had a warm, warm, kind soul.  And people like that you don't find everyday.  We're gonna miss her very, very much," Flynn says.

Tom McFeggan is wanted on $1 million bond. Police say he's driving white two-door Chevy Cavalier with Illinois license plate 269-5502. If you know where he is, call Rockford Police at (815) 987-5824 or CrimeStoppers at 963-7867.
