SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois lawmakers are up against a ticking clock as they try to close a massive hole in the state budget.
The legislative session is scheduled to end at Sunday at midnight. If they miss that deadline, then it will suddenly require a super-majority to approve a new budget.
That will give the Republican minority new leverage.
The Illinois Senate has approved sales and income tax increases topping $5 billion. Now the question is whether House Democrats can find enough votes to do the same.
Democratic leaders want to raise taxes and cut spending to fill a deficit of at least $11.6 billion.
Republicans oppose raising taxes.
