ROCKFORD - A convention at Centennial United Methodist Church promotes empowerment for Latinos in Illinois.
A group called LULAC hosted it. That stands for League of United Latin American Citizens. Speakers touched on topics that have a direct impact on the Latino community, like education, immigration, and civic rights.
They also want people to know they don't have to put up with discrimination, and there is help available. "The Latino community needs to know that there are agencies and non-profit groups that they can go to to obtain support, referrals, linkages, whatever it is that they may need," said LULAC of Ilinois State Director Maggie Rivera.
As a national organization, LULAC just celebrated its 80th anniversary.
