SPRINGFIELD (WREX) - Medical supplies to help the state of Illinois deal with its swine flu virus cases have arrived.
Several state agencies, including the Illinois National Guard, are organizing the packaging and distribution of the supplies that just arrived from the federal Strategic National Stockpile.
Kits containing the supplies will be shipped to local health departments and hospitals throughout the state on Thursday and will be handed out in the coming days.
"Right now our goals are to identify swine flu cases as quickly as possible and to stop the spread. The most important things people can do to keep themselves and others healthy are to stay home if sick, cover your cough or sneeze with your arm or tissue and properly wash your hands frequently," said Dr. Damon T. Arnold, Illinois Department of Public Health Director.
On Thursday, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Illinois has now seen 17 probable cases of swine flu. Eight of those cases are in Cook County, six in Kane County, and one each in DuPage, Lake and McHenry counties.
The specimens for the cases have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.
