WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) - A 17-year-old man may have accidentally shot himself in the basement of his family's home.
Around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies were called to 5831 Hillsbrough Road. They found John Vega, 17, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to a Rockford area hospital where he underwent surgery.
Vega lives in the home with his family. Police say Vega may have shot himself accidentally. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
