CHICAGO (AP) -- The chairman of the Chicago Sun-Times wants readers to know that today's bankruptcy filing doesn't mean the newspaper or its Web site is going out of business.
But the filing is widely seen as a step toward shutting down a feisty paper known for uncovering city scandals. The bankruptcy filing by the Sun-Times Media Group does mean both of Chicago's major daily newspapers are operating under bankruptcy protection.
The Sun-Times Media Group owns the Chicago Sun-Times and dozens of suburban newspapers.
It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Delaware court today. Owners said it will continue to operate its print and online properties.
Tribune Co. filed for Chapter 11 in December. Tribune is the parent company of the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers.
