ROCKFORD - A new medication offers new hope to people in the Rockford area fighting heroin and opiate addiction.
Suboxone works similar to methadone and keeps people from going into the severe symptoms of withdrawal. But, unlike methadone, you can't overdose on Suboxone.
PHASE treatment center will start using the new drug for its patients, especially those addicted to Oxycontin and vicodin. Doctors warn, however, Suboxone alone will not cure addictions. PHASE Medical Director Dr. Robert Bales says, "Really, to treat opiate addiction or any addiction, you have behavioral counseling, you need to have group therapy, you need to really retrain yourself and learn to live life differently."
Suboxone is better for patients who do not use large amounts of heroin or opiates.
