Meeting tonight to discuss possible teacher cuts in Belvidere

Posted: Updated:

BELVIDERE (WREX) - The Belvidere School District says more teachers than they first anticipated may lose their jobs.

Second and third year teachers have been added to the list of teachers that will get pink slips at the end of the school year. Originally the district was going to be forced to let its first year teachers go.

A public forum to discuss the possible cuts is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Central Middle School.

The reason for the cuts is the state's budget crisis which is having a trickle down affect on districts all over the state. On Wednesday, Governor Quinn proposed a 1 percent tax increase to try to prevent education funding cuts.

Belvidere School District Superintendent Michael Houselog says the state already owes the district more than $2 million and by June it could be $4 million behind.
