Questions about GM's future cloud car-shopping

Associated Press - May 31, 2009 1:14 PM ET

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - In vehicle showrooms in Illinois and across the country, questions about the future of auto giant General Motors Corp. add to the usual haggling and give & take.

Car shoppers have been kicking the tires a little more cautiously as salespeople try to ease their worries about service warranties, resale values, and even whether GM dealerships will still be around in another year.

In Chicago, realtor Leo Chavez said he's feeling GM's pain himself.

He's been trying to get out of his Pontiac Grand Prix, a discontinued GM line, but said its trade-in value has fallen and dealers use that against him in bargaining.

Sitting at Chicago's Grossinger City Autoplex, he was trying to trade for a used Toyota Camry.

He said he's disappointed in GM and has more faith in Toyota.
