ROCKFORD - The opening of a new plasma donation center prompts a reminder from the Rock River Valley Blood Center.
Talecris Plasma Resources just opened at North Towne Mall in Rockford. The RRVBC says plasma donations through a center like that go to make medicine, but those donations don't help hospital patients. It wants to make sure you still donate blood that will stay in the area.
"A little bit of what we end up with as a byproduct could end up making those same pharmaceuticals, but the plasma center does not support our local hospitals with transfusion centers and blood products," said Jennifer Bowman, Rock River Valley Blood Center.
Plasma centers pay for donors, but that's illegal for community blood centers to do because people might lie about their medical history just to make money.
