ROCKFORD (WREX) - Boylan boy's basketball coach Steve Goers stepped down Thursday, retiring as the winningest coach in IHSA history.
Goers walks away with 881 career wins, 17 more than longtime Westchester St. Joseph coach Gene Pingatore.
Goers came to Boylan in 1980 and led the Titans to seven appearances at the IHSA state tournament, including fourth place finishes in 1992, '94, and '97. Boylan's last trip to state came in 2007 when the Titans were eliminated in the state quarterfinals.
Boylan lost in the class 4A regional title game to Auburn in 2011, marking only the fifth time in Goers' 30 years on the job that the Titans failed to advance out of the first round of the postseason.
Goers held a press conference this afternoon and Mike Morig will have more on this story coming up tonight on 13 News at 5, 6, 10 and right here on WREX.com
