City of Rockford turns out street lights to save money

ROCKFORD (WREX) - Rockford's on a mission to save half a million dollars by turning out the lights.
The Public Works Department plans to get rid of about 2,300 street lights. Director Tim Hanson says right now Rockford has about 14,000 street lights and they're not all necessary. "We went out and looked at it, and there are some streets that we have in residential areas that have a street light at every yard. Street lighting is not supposed to be yard lights. We have looked at it and said this has to be for traffic flow."
Some neighbors aren't happy about losing their lights. Hanson says the plan will move forward with a focus on taking lights out of each ward evenly.
