DEKALB (WREX) - Investigators charge a 34-year-old DeKalb man with murder for the death of 18-year-old Antinette "Toni" Keller.

Police say U.S. Marshals in Louisiana arrested William "Billy" Curl on October 26th..  He's charged with 5 counts of first-degree murder, criminal sexual assault, and arson.

According to investigators, police started looking at Curl after he didn't show up for a scheduled interview.  DeKalb's police chief says Curl ran to Mexico.  They tracked him as he crossed the border back into the United States and stopped in Covington, Louisiana.  Police say it looks like he was trying to get hired as a day laborer.

Investigators searched his hotel room in Louisiana, and where he lived in DeKalb.  Major Case Squad detectives flew to Louisiana to question Curl the same day he was arrested.

Curl was never a student or employee of Northern Illinois University where Keller was a student.  She vanished October 14th, after she told friends she was going for a walk in a park south of NIU's campus.  After a search of the park, police found burned remains.  The remains were burned so badly, investigators had to wait until tests were done to be sure the bones were human.  Forensic experts are doing DNA tests to positively identify the remains.  Detectives say they found items nearby that match personal items Keller owned.

Police still want to hear from anyone who might have information about the case, and whether they can place Curl in the park between October 14th and 18th.  Call them at 815-748-8407.

Curl's bail is set at $5 million.

Keller was from Plainfield, Illinois.
