Democratic senatorial hopefuls back cap & trade

Associated Press - January 19, 2010 9:04 PM ET

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - The Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate are backing cap & trade environmental legislation despite the potential impact on the Illinois coal industry.

The candidates said Tuesday night at a southern Illinois debate that it's possible to protect the environment while also protecting coal jobs. They say green technology can maintain coal as a key part of the nation's energy plans.

Cheryle Jackson calls climate change both a threat and an incredible opportunity.

Cap & trade is a proposal to limit pollution that contributes to climate change. Then companies could buy and sell credits letting them emit pollution. Critics say it would amount to a huge tax.

Candidates David Hoffman and Jacob Meister called for tariffs on imports from countries that don't adopt clean-air policies.
