SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois state education officials say parents should practice math with their children during winter break to keep skills sharp.
State schools Superintendent Christopher Koch (KUK') says parents can help kids with math through games and everyday activities such as shopping, cooking and tasks around the house.
Fern Tribbery is president of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She says parents not only help children by practicing with them but by having a "can-do" attitude about using math.
Children can help parents estimate total cost of items on a shopping trip and determine change due. Cooking and baking are good for working with fractions.
