SIU board signs off on new Carbondale chancellor

Associated Press - December 11, 2009 9:54 AM ET

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - It's official: Southern Illinois University's flagship campus in Carbondale has a new chancellor.

The university's board of trustees signed off Thursday on Rita Cheng to oversee the 20,300-student school.

SIU President Glenn Poshard last month tapped the 57-year-old Cheng to succeed Samuel Goldman, the former university trustee who has served as interim chancellor.

Cheng has been provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since May 2005.

Thursday's lone dissenting vote was from trustee Bill Bonan II. He says he disagrees with approving Cheng's more than $341,000 salary while the university struggles financially because of lagging reimbursements from the state.
