SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Deaf students are sharpening their spelling skills for the 13th annual statewide deaf finger-spelling bee.
Fifth- to eighth-graders throughout Illinois are participating in the event in Springfield. It's patterned after the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee, except all spelling will be done in sign language. It's designed to give deaf kids the same kind of academic activities as their peers who can hear.
The Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission is hosting the event on Friday afternoon at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.
Participants were finalists in their own schools' finger-spelling bees.
