Hundreds gather to remember Rockford firefighter

Associated Press - November 29, 2009 3:54 PM ET

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - More than 400 mourners have gathered to remember a 37-year-old Rockford firefighter who died of a heart attack.

Terrance Freeman Sr. died last week while visiting family. Services were held at a Rockford funeral home Saturday.

Mourners included more than 100 firefighters from 20 departments statewide.

Freeman's wife, Lawanda, says he was playing with their 2-year-old son when he collapsed. She says he died in her arms.

Fire Chief Derek Bergsten says Freeman's death is under investigation. He says the adrenaline rush of being on-call as a firefighter can affect people's systems.

Bergsten says he'd recently received a compliment about Freeman's compassion as a firefighter.

Freeman had been with the Rockford Fire Department since 2005.
