BELOIT (WREX) - Firefighters in Beloit get a new tool that could save lives. It's called a Carbon Monoxide Pulse Oximeter, and the department now has three of them.
Those meters tell paramedics how much carbon monoxide is in a person's system. The chemical is colorless and odorless, so the meter shows paramedics if a patient needs further treatment.
"People have actually died in their sleep, not realizing that they were being exposed to carbon monoxide, and this is one of those tools that we can use to at least decide if they need to go to the hospital to get treated for it," said Jeremy Flanagan.
Money for the meters came from donations to the Fire Department and Paramedic Fund.
