ROCKFORD (WREX) - Rockford aldermen approve a new contract for some city union workers.
A one year deal with AFSCME 1058 and 1058B passed.
Workers pay won't go up, but neither will insurance premiums and deductibles. That will prevent any layoffs within the union as the city tries balancing its budget.
"I think it does signal to our tax payers that our firefighters union and our AFSCME Union employees understand the dramatic circumstances our city's facing and our hope is the police union will understand those circumstances and arrive at a similar agreement," Patrick Hayes Rockford City Legal Director said.
More than 270 city workers make up the union including 911 operators, public works employees, city hall clerks, and the building department.
