DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Authorities say a body found Thursday afternoon on the north shore of Lake Superior was that of a missing missing kayaker and former Milwaukee school teacher.
Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson says Friday that the medical examiner confirms the body is that of 48-year-old Douglas R. Winter. The official cause of death has not been determined.
The body was recovered just north of 2 Harbors in the Flood Bay area, roughly where searchers expected to find it given the wave patterns of the past few weeks.
Winter was last heard from about 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 19, when he called a friend to say he was two to three miles from shore and the waves were getting bigger.
His kayak washed ashore Oct. 20 in the Beaver Bay area.
