Eight gifts that keep on giving

All of us are aware that the past two years have brought a serious recession to the United States. But as the holiday season approaches, some disturbing information has surfaced about household income. Over the past decade, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, average U.S. household income did not increase. In fact, for some, income declined.

The result is that many Americans must stretch their dollars further than ever before. As the holidays approach, it's a good idea to put that principle into practice with gift ideas that will keep giving all year through.

1. Memberships

Either give by yourself, or combine efforts with other family members to give a membership to a cultural facility, children's museum or entertainment complex. The recipient will gain free admission all year, and with some organizations, you'll reap the bonus of an income tax deduction.

2. Charitable donations

Many charities and nonprofit organizations allow gifts in someone's honor. Consider a donation for those on your list "who have everything." They will know that the gift has helped others less fortunate for months after the holiday. To make it more memorable, wrap up a photo that reminds you of the charity's mission, and place in an inexpensive magnetic photo frame that the recipient can keep on his or her refrigerator.

3. A new suit

A job-hunter might get long-term use out of a new suit (truly new and returnable, in case the fit isn't right) or a gift certificate to a store where he or she could purchase business clothes, shoes, a briefcase or an accessory. Package the gift in a rolled-up necktie (even a thrift-store version will do) or business card holder for fun impact.

4. Auto club membership

A recent college graduate, new car owner or new parent might gain a great deal of peace of mind from knowing they're protected on the road. Retirees can benefit from road protection and travel discounts, too.

5. Subscriptions

A subscription is a classic gift, but that doesn't mean it is unappreciated. Order a travel publication, a magazine that focuses on a recipient's favorite hobby, or try a good art publication for an art-lover. Or think outside the magazine rack and subscribe to a movie-delivery service or other service the recipient will enjoy.

6. Dinner out

Give a couple a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant. If it won't expire until after they have a chance to use it on their next anniversary, if they wish, it's even better.

7. An heirloom

Whether it's a necklace with a special history, or a copy of a long-lost favorite childhood book, gifts for very special people, with memories attached, need not be costly.

8. Part of nature

Give a new homeowner a potted seedling or a gift certificate for a tree that can be planted in spring to beautify the yard in years to come. Give a planet-crazy kid a star named after them, or buy someone interested in the tropics a yard of rainforest.

The key to long-lived gifts is personalization. Put a little thought into the lives and personalities of those near and dear to you, and you just might stumble on the perfect year-round gift.
