ROCKFORD (WREX) - A researcher with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
James A. Powers, Jr. got the award from the National Association of Social Workers' Illinois chapter. The award covers the State of Illinois and is given to one social worker each year for distinguished service to the profession and the public.
Powers started his career in 1974 in Rockford as a therapist at Family Counseling Services. He eventually became executive director. After more than 20 years, Powers left FCS to direct the employee assistance program at Rockford Health System. He has also headed up Family Advocate and Easter Seals Children's Development Center, plus worked with colleges and universities to help educate young social workers.
Powers now works at the College of Medicine and serves on various boards.
