ROCKFORD (WREX) - Work is officially underway on the new Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens in Sinnissippi Park.

The official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new conservatory was held Tuesday morning at Sinnissippi Park.

The Rockford Park District announced staff appointments for the new facility. Ruth Miller, Program Director of the City of Gardens, has been appointed Conservatory Facility Manager and Dan Erwin, current Manager of Horticulture & Parks for the District will take on additional horticulture management responsibilities for the new facility. Long time Park District Deputy Director of Operations Ron Butler will oversee the entire operation of the new conservatory.

"Ruth and Dan bring years of experience to the operation. Both are extremely well-qualified and bring many talents and much expertise to their respective positions. When the Conservatory doors open in December 2010, I am confident that the community will be truly amazed at what has been accomplished under their direction," said Deputy Director of Operations Ron Butler.

After a few delays, the old Sinnissippi Greenhouse was torn down Monday afternoon. The building was supposed to come down last week, but it took longer than expected for crews to remove asbestos from the building.

The 86-year-old Sinnissippi Greenhouse was shut down last month, launching the start of the project to build the new state-of-the art facility.

The Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens project is considered to be the centerpiece of the Rockford Park District's 100 year anniversary.

"When completed, the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens will be a showcase for the entire region. Additionally, from an economic impact standpoint, this project is employing approximately 100 full-time workers over the next 18 months, which has an immediate benefit to our local community," said Rockford Park District Board President Doug Brooks.

The total cost of the project is $11.2 million and will feature:

  • Indoor and Outdoor Gardens Open to the Public (year round)
  • Growing Greenhouse
  • Meeting Room and Classroom Space (available for rent)
  • Location for Small Weddings, Receptions, and Catered Events
  • Children's Educational and Play Area
  • Gift Shop
  • Sculptures
  • Catering Kitchen
  • Outdoor Terrace

The new Nicholas Conservatory and Garden is expected to be opened to the public by December 2010.
