ROCKFORD (WREX) - Police find a murdered woman Friday evening after arresting a man outside the home.

The incident started at 7:15 p.m. when a woman called 911 from 1219 Greenwood Avenue. Police arrived and talked to neighbors who said shots had been fired from inside the home. While there, police heard more gunshots.

Police then cleared the street and surrounding homes, taking up firing positions outside. After about 30 minutes a man exited the home on his stomach, crawling toward police. He was taken into custody.

After entering the home, police found a woman in her 40s in the kitchen area. Deputy Police Chief Greg Lindmark would not say how she was killed, but said a homicide investigation is under way.

Lindmark also said an assault rifle and a handgun were found in the home.

Identities were not released until family members could be contacted.

A nearby neighbor said he heard multiple "pops" that sounded like gunfire, then a woman's scream.

Another neighbor said the area "had its moments."

"I guess it's right on the border of sort of not very good situations," said Keith Jackson, noting that an earlier murder was committed a block away at Longwood Avenue in March.

Lindmark said there was nobody else in the home at the time of the incident.
