ROCKFORD (WREX) - The Rockford IceHogs signed an inspirational leader to their team on Wednesday afternoon at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Sydney Ives was introduced as an honorary IceHog for a day. She was introduced at a press conference inside the 'Hogs locker room.
Ives, 10, was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer almost a year ago. She's been undergoing treatment at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Teen. for the brain tumor classified as Astrostoma Anaplastic Grade III.
Family and friends joined Ives at the press conference on Wednesday afternoon where she was presented with an IceHogs jersey and a hockey stick autographed by members of the team.
Ives jersey number is 19 and has "Ivestrong" on the back, the slogan the family has adopted during Sydney's fight with cancer.
"She's my hero, she's who I want to be when I grow up", said Sydney's mother Tasha. "We've had so much support. People who've never even met us and have just fallen in love with her and it gives us more purpose and reason to fight when you know you have someone behind you."
"It's an honor for us as an organization to be able to fulfill a little girl's wish and bring a smile to her face on this day," said Bernard. "Sydney has had a lot of tough days and we are very happy to make this a good one for her and show her that the IceHogs will be with her every step of the way during her courageous battle."
