ROCKFORD (WREX) - Rockford police find the red Chevy Blazer they think was used in a shooting in front of Auburn High School. Officers discovered the vehicle on the southeast side of the city around 11:15 am. There was no one in the car, but Deputy Chief Greg Lindmark says the investigation is progressing.
Police say an Auburn 9th grader was shot in front of the freshman campus this morning. It happened just before classes began between 8:50 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
The Rockford School District says a red SUV drove by and someone shot the teen in the leg. Emergency crews brought him to the hospital. He is expected to be okay.
Rockford police are on the scene investigating. The Auburn freshman and main campus are both on lock down. Nearby McIntosh Elementary is also on lock down.
Some parents have taken their kids out of school, but police say there's no need to do that. Laura Lewis, a parent, tells 13 News, "Oh my God, my baby. I didn't know who it was. My child doesn't get in a lot of trouble, but you know, kids can be kids. And you never know."
